Hyaluronidase/Dermal Filler Dissolving

Hyaluronidase is an injectable enzyme used to break down hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler. It may be used when filler needs to be reduced or dissolved because of an unwanted aesthetic result, product placement or certain complications.

At View Laser in Delta and Tsawwassen, Dr. Martin Ray assesses the area, previous filler treatment and reason for dissolving before determining whether hyaluronidase is appropriate.

  • COST

Treatment starts at $750 for new patients. Cost varies depending on the area being treated, the amount of filler present and whether more than one treatment is required. Your treatment plan and associated costs will be reviewed following an assessment with Dr. Ray. Not covered by MSP.

  • RECOVERY

Minimal downtime is common. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, itching or bruising may occur around the injection sites.

The treated area may continue to change as swelling settles and the filler is broken down, so the final appearance may not be immediately apparent.

  • NUMBER OF TREATMENTS

Some concerns may respond to a single treatment, while others may require additional sessions. The amount of hyaluronidase and number of treatments required depend on factors including the type and amount of HA filler present, where it was placed and the reason it is being dissolved.

Hyaluronidase may be used to address:

  • Unwanted or excessive HA filler
  • Asymmetry related to HA filler placement
  • Lumps or irregularities associated with HA filler
  • Filler migration
  • Overcorrection
  • Certain complications associated with HA dermal filler

Hyaluronidase also has an important role in the medical management of suspected vascular complications following HA filler treatment. A suspected vascular occlusion requires prompt medical assessment and should not be treated as a routine filler-dissolving appointment.

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. When injected into an area containing HA dermal filler, it can accelerate the breakdown of the hyaluronic acid gel.

Before treatment, Dr. Ray will assess the area and review any available information about your previous filler, including the product used, treatment location, amount injected and when it was performed.

Hyaluronidase is then carefully injected into selected areas using a fine needle or cannula when appropriate. Treatment is individualized, as the amount required and response can vary considerably.

Changes may begin relatively quickly, but swelling immediately following treatment can make the result difficult to assess. Additional assessment or treatment may therefore be recommended after the area has had time to settle.

Hyaluronidase is specifically used to break down hyaluronic acid and cannot be expected to dissolve non-HA fillers or biostimulatory injectable products.

Tell Dr. Ray about your medical history, medications, allergies, previous reactions and all previous injectable treatments in the area.

If possible, provide the name of the filler previously injected, when it was administered and how much was used.

If you are experiencing increasing pain, unusual skin colour changes, coolness of the skin, visual symptoms or other concerning symptoms following dermal filler treatment, contact a medical provider immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, itching or bruising may occur following treatment. Avoid rubbing or massaging the area unless specifically instructed by Dr. Ray.

Allow the area time to settle before assessing the final aesthetic result or considering additional filler treatment. Dr. Ray will advise you on appropriate timing based on your individual circumstances.

Contact the clinic promptly if you experience unexpected or worsening symptoms following treatment.

Individual results and response to hyaluronidase vary. Hyaluronidase treatment carries potential risks, including allergic reactions.
